Flight Release

Create a timestamped flight release record before departure, confirming weather, airworthiness, crew duty, fuel, and passenger status.

What Is a Flight Release?

A flight release is a formal pre-departure authorization that the dispatcher or PIC signs off on before a flight departs. It creates a permanent, timestamped record confirming that all required checks were completed. This is required for Part 135 operations and is a best practice for Part 91 professional operations.

When Flight Release Appears

The Release Flight button appears on a trip detail page when:

  1. The trip status is Assigned (a pilot has been assigned)
  2. No release has been created yet
  3. Flight Release is enabled in Professional → Settings

Completing a Flight Release

Click Release Flight to open the checklist. Each item must be checked before the release can be signed:

Checklist ItemDescription
Weather reviewedCurrent METAR/TAF at departure and destination reviewed and acceptable
Aircraft airworthyNo open grounded squawks; MEL deferrals reviewed and acceptable
Fuel load adequateFuel quantity confirmed sufficient for the flight
Passenger count confirmedManifest matches expected passengers
Crew duty within limits (Part 135)Pilot has not exceeded duty time limits

The crew duty item only appears when the operation type is set to Part 135 or Part 135 Commuter in Pro Settings.

You can also add notes for any special conditions or remarks.

Clicking Release Flight creates the record immediately with the current timestamp and your name as the releasing authority.

Aircraft Airworthiness Warning

If the aircraft has open grounded squawks or open MEL items, the checklist automatically surfaces a count (e.g., "1 open grounded squawk", "2 open MEL items"). You must still manually check the airworthiness box — this is a deliberate acknowledgment that you've reviewed the condition and are releasing the flight with full knowledge.

After Release

Once a flight release exists, the trip header shows a green Released badge. The Release Flight button is replaced by this badge and the checklist can no longer be modified.

Part 135 Requirements

Under 14 CFR Part 135, a flight release (or load manifest / dispatch release) is required before each flight. The exact requirements depend on your OpSpec. Aloft360's flight release creates a timestamped record that can support compliance documentation. Always consult your DO and OpSpec for specific requirements.
