How to track student citizenship status and TSA Alien Flight Student Program (AFSP) approvals as required under 49 CFR § 1552.
Under 49 CFR Part 1552, flight training providers must verify the citizenship of every student before providing flight training. For non-U.S. citizens, the school must obtain a TSA Alien Flight Student Program (AFSP) clearance before training can begin.
Aloft360's TSA tracking feature helps you record and monitor this compliance information for every student — separately from the optional Student Training Module. TSA tracking is always available to admins, owners, and CFIs.
Select the student's citizenship status from the dropdown:
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| US Citizen | Born in the US, or naturalized — no AFSP required |
| US National | Non-citizen US national (e.g., American Samoa) — no AFSP required |
| Non-Citizen (LPR/Alien) | Lawful permanent resident or foreign national — AFSP required |
| Unknown | Not yet collected |
The status badge in the card header updates automatically to reflect the selection.
When Non-Citizen is selected, additional fields appear:
Click Save TSA Record to persist your changes.
The TSA status badge is visible on the student's member profile header and on the Students overview page, giving you a quick compliance view across your roster:
| Badge | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 🟢 TSA OK | US Citizen or US National — no AFSP required |
| 🟢 TSA Approved | Non-citizen with active AFSP approval |
| 🟡 TSA Pending | Non-citizen with AFSP submitted, awaiting approval |
| 🔴 TSA Denied | Non-citizen whose application was denied |
| 🔴 TSA Expired | Non-citizen whose approval has lapsed |
| ⬜ TSA Unknown | Citizenship not yet recorded |
Important: Aloft360 tracks this information for your records but does not submit anything to the TSA on your behalf. Flight schools must comply with 49 CFR Part 1552 independently. Consult your FSDO or legal counsel if you have questions about your obligations.
