Aircraft financing in 2026

Aircraft loans are different from car or mortgage loans. Lenders specialize in aviation because the collateral, depreciation curve, and AD compliance considerations don't map cleanly to general-purpose lending.

Specialty aviation lenders — AOPA Finance, EAA Aircraft Loans, Pinnacle Aircraft Finance, Currency Capital, Scope Aircraft Finance — usually offer better terms than your local bank for aircraft. They understand the asset.

Typical terms in 2026: 7–9% interest for well-qualified buyers on piston singles, 15–25% down, 10–20 year term. Newer aircraft, stronger credit, and lower loan-to-value all push the rate down. Older airframes, lower credit, or specialty types push it up.

A note on cash vs financing: if your alternative use of the cash earns more than the after-tax loan rate, financing makes sense. The opportunity cost matters as much as the headline rate.

Aircraft loan FAQ

What rate should I expect on an aircraft loan?
Aircraft loan rates in 2026 are typically 7–9% for well-qualified buyers, depending on aircraft age, loan-to-value, and credit profile. Specialty aviation lenders (AOPA Finance, EAA, Pinnacle) often offer better terms than general-purpose banks.
How much down payment do I need for an aircraft loan?
15–25% is typical for piston singles. Newer aircraft and stronger credit profiles can reach 10–15%. Light jets and turboprops often require more.
What loan terms are available for aircraft?
10 to 20 years is the typical range. Older aircraft may be capped at shorter terms. Longer terms reduce the monthly payment but increase the total interest paid.
Should I finance or pay cash?
Depends on opportunity cost. If your alternative use of the cash earns more than the loan rate after tax, financing makes sense. If you would otherwise hold cash, financing adds interest cost. Most owners finance somewhere between 50–80% of purchase price to balance liquidity and cost.
