DPE

Designated Pilot Examiner

An FAA-designated examiner authorized to conduct practical tests for pilot certificates and ratings.

A Designated Pilot Examiner is a private individual authorized by the FAA to conduct practical tests (checkrides) on behalf of the FSDO. DPEs work as independent contractors; their authorization specifies which certificates and ratings they may examine.

DPEs are paid by the applicant directly. Typical 2026 rates for a private pilot practical test in the U.S. run $700–$1,200 depending on region.

There's a separate FAA inspector path (an FAA employee directly conducting the practical test), but the vast majority of GA practical tests are administered by DPEs.

When it matters

DPE availability is often the bottleneck on getting a checkride scheduled. Career-track flight schools maintain ongoing relationships with multiple DPEs.
